The comparison is interesting, but the available download scene won't load for me and crashes Blender every time. Has anyone managed to get it to work?

yes, it loaded fine with the exception of some missing ies, but works ok. As I mentioned over at blenderartists, a small optimization could bring time down a lot since he wasnt using clamping at all.

The first link (Cycles?) crashes here too, but the third (Lux) works.
