Exterior is where the normal points, interior is the opposite side of the face.

You can not use a 2D object if you want a correct volume rendering, just use a slim box if you need a plane.

Seems to be close to be finished now. Glass feeds are a bit too clear due to position of the lights I guess.
The idea of the unperfect glasses fits but the effect should be smoother.

For better results try to follow a real photography as reference both for lighting and compositing !

@Sharlybg
"for lighting" This is a good idea. Thanks.
"and compositing" This only helps of course if the chosen photography has a good composition.

Maybe I should note my intentions for a test scenes in future. Here I liked to show specular lights on glasses what required a little trick for the material.

The glasss material here is mixed with metal. The metal supports reflections. To avoid intransparency opacity for metal is set below 1.

My intention here is to get a feeling what is possible with volume rendering. Playing around with the nice possibilites of luxcorerender I noticed some unexpected effect. Do you see what I mean?

Further experiments revealed a ususally hidden space property. As it looks like space is made from subcubes and between them there is unexpected space for light extension. Please have a look at the following picture.
