I'll run a test as soon as I find some time, thanks for your effort.
Regarding the preview - I was thinking of something like this:
I think it might helb for IES tranformation directly in 3D view.

it would be great to have that kind of preview.
Also 3dsmax has that kind of preview and it useful to find easly and visually the orientation and distribution of the light.
