I'm on a MacBook with with a quad-core i7 and a GT750M (see signature) which is not quite sufficient for animation rendering.
For Xmas I'm looking for something more adequate with a hexacore at the least.

Animated volumetric caustics!
Wanted to do this for years, now it took me three days to render four seconds

The render speed of the Ryzen octocore in my new PC is not as fast as I hoped for.
Maybe this is a Windows thing, like on Linux CPU rendering would be faster?
I think I read somewhere that rendering with Cycles on Win10 was slower than on Win7 or Linux.
And maybe the Spectre and Meltdown patches are slowing down things?

I run both windows 10 pro and ubuntu 18.10 and so far I haven't noticed any significant differences on either cycles or luxcore.
If there are any they're probably not too noticeable, what's slow is slow what's fast is fast on both systems (and that's with my win install running all kinds of services and malwarebytes and who knows what accumulated over years, while my linux is relatively fresh and clean of anything).

Ryzen 2700X (see signature).
I was comparing it to the Intel quadcore i7 2.3GHz in my MacBook and on the pool scene I posted above the Ryzen does ~950k samples/s whereas the i7 makes ~440k (one frame takes 40 min on the Ryzen).
I was hoping a newer CPU with double thread count and more GHz would do better than 2.2x.
But Geekbench4 is 26642 vs 12226, so apparently I'm good

That's helpful, I won't start experiments with Linux then, I'm new to Windows, had the guys at the PC shop assemble and install everything for me and am very happy that everything runs smoothly, so I can concentrate on learning Blender and LuxCore better instead of struggling with the operating systems.

Note that this only concerns C++ CPU rendering, not OpenCL/CUDA.

I'll do some comparison once we get gi caching. No point rendering on cpu now.

Apparently Intel CPUs with similar core and GHz specs have advantages in speed and power efficiency, but not equivalent to their price premium.
