Is LuxCore faster than Cycles?

Post by squeak »

I'm planning to get a rendering rig since Cycles is horribly slow on my current best configuration (ASUS X552E, AMD A4 quad-core mobile CPU with Radeon IGP, 4GB RAM, Pisi Linux 2.1). Sadly, I have to cut corners since even these "budget" configurations are prohibitively expensive for me. I tried LuxCore out this week and it seems a lot faster than Cycles to me.
My main question is whether LuxCore will be faster on a Ryzen 5 than Cycles, especially when it comes to rendering animations.
Here's the configuration I'm aiming for:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor (€120.00 @ Amazon France)
Motherboard: MSI B450M-A PRO MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard (€55.11 @ Amazon France)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR4-2666 Memory (€34.99 @ Amazon France)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (€43.80 @ Amazon France)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB VENTUS XS OC Video Card (€237.06 @ Amazon France)
Case: Deepcool MATREXX 30 MicroATX Mini Tower Case (€27.04 @ Amazon France)
Power Supply: Corsair CXM 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply (€72.29 @ Amazon France)
Total: €590.29

For interior archviz rendering luxcore with PGI caching is by far faster than cycles.

The same with caustics render (glass and pool render).

And also no matter your new hardware both cycles and lux will be improved so you have nothing to loose.
