Is it possible to have various objects with their own material but share a colour, so that if I change the colour on one of the materials it will update in all the other materials?
An example would be a cushion with buttons. The cushion has Material A, the buttons have Material B, but they both share the same Constant Colour node.

Yes, the texture node trees are intended for this use.
