About the water drops, the scene is an interior scene, an apartement, the jewel on a leather part of a desk with a light on the desk and now window nearby, so yes the HDR is dark high contrasted. The roses are freshly cut and brought home, with the water droplets to keep them fresh. So no, they should not get their light from a natural environnement more than what they already have from their surrondings. They could be brighter if the scene was getting sunlight coming from a window, but that is not the case this time.
Also something else to mention, the vignette effect. The vignette effect darkens the image. That also affects the waterdrops pretty much. But this view achieves more visual impact with the vignette than without.
