Nvidia Turing

hey guys seem there is a big moove for GPU rendering as Nvidia unveil Turing graphique card. Turing card seem to have dedicated core to compute ray tracing operation.

how this could impact GPU rendering ?

If it is exposed trough some usable API (anyway, at the moment is just marketing vaporware, they haven't disclosed any detail about what is really in there).

I'm afraid this will be protect inside some closed source technologies like CUDA before.

But things are not completly lost as all the graphic and gaming industry are converging to the same ray tracing technology.

What a painfull Nvidia Gamescon. Such high priced GPU for closed tech like cuda ( platform centric philosophy). Nothing really pratical for everyday path tracing renderer workflow. I fear that if you're not CUDa capable it is going to be the same with RT core. They didn't care about opencl 2.0 support so can't bet on them. If only AMD can comeback with another disruptive product like threadripper for gpu. But it's likely to happen soon.

Unreal engine already support RTX and other real time engines will adapt it soon so will see a turn to realtime workflow :?: Model your scene in Blender export and setup materials in unreal engine and render in one second. :idea:

NVIDIA released Optix (ray-trace library) as part of drivers install, making it compatible with GPL and Blender. Another great step is NVIDIA releasing material library MDL as BSD. NVIDIA is happy to support us making it all happen. More details in coming months.

Just to be clear: this allow the usage of Optix with open source projects but it still require an NVIDIA GPU as Optix only works there, it is mandatory, not an option ... not exactly a small detail.

I'm sure NVIDIA really like this solution :lol:
