Yes, but OpenVDB is not the default and most users will still use the old point cache.
But yes, if it turns out to be too much work then I'll just add a label to the UI that says "use OpenVDB for fast smoke rendering".

I also find this annoying and it is on my todo list but I didn't find the time to address it so far. So no, currently there is no way (however maybe you can do it with Blender trickery, light groups are a scene property so if you create a second scene and link in all your objects, you should be able...

Do you have an old LuxBlend installation? Disable it in the user prefs, save user prefs, restart and try again.
By the way 2.79b is out (but it does not matter for this problem).
