I believe Thea renderer had an analytical solution to this problem so it seems to be possible for an unbiased renderer.

There was a 'scatter' material in Classic Lux useful for this kind of things (it required some elaborate setup though). I always wondered whether it's possible to have a translucent material but, unlike matte translucent, with configurable mean scattering angle.

If someone else needs it urgently or sees the matter different, he can go ahead and implement it and I'll answer questions if there are any. What Dev want to tell you is that they are only 2 and there are a looooot of work they certainly know how usefull mat preview can be but we have to wait a bit ;) .So before mat preview happen there some simple workaround everyone can do to help test. Looks like LuxCore is compiled with SSE4 instruction set, at least I'm unable to run it on my ancient Phenom II CPU — throws "Illegal instruction" error. Not a big problem for me but could be a hint in case other folks start complaining on mysterious startup crashes.

They are not interchangeable things. Material preview is a lot more responsive to updates, clears up faster and provides a generalized view of a material without the influence of scene details (e.g. coloured lighting, colour bleed from other objects, and so on).
