Is it equal to Blender cycles adaptive microdisplacement features ? From what I know, Cycles can adaptively tessellate each face of a mesh depending on camera distance. You can pass the resolution as a command line argument.

This thing is a lot larger than I would have guessed from the render. The seals (?) are great for judging the size.
