playing with caustics
Finally it's possible to render HD animations with realistic caustics on my old MacBook, yay! Thanks to the dev team making this possible! A plane, a cube, and BiDir metropolis: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ro1ai3txjtj3m1y/turncube.mov (Dropbox player is evil, apparently full res only with download)

Re: BlendLuxCore-v2.1alpha4-mac64-opencl
@FarbigeWelt: I have an old (2009) iMac too, but currently on 10.12.6 it is not really working with BlendLuxCore yet. Thank you for the information. Because update to 12.13 is not supported for this old iMac, I have to wait for 10.12 luxcorerender version or buy a new iMac. Some Progress: LuxCoreRe...

Re: luxcorerender-v2.1alpha4-mac64-opencl
I got luxcorerender-v2.1alpha4-mac64 working on an iMac (late 2009) MacOS 10.12.6:
(The openCL version crashes presumably because the graphics does openCL 1.0 only)

Re: Metropolis SDS problem?
Does the denoiser even work with BidirVM, have you tested it? Not yet tested, just an assumption (if it doesn't work I'd use Photoshop). First I'm going to learn about the engines and samplers before moving on to stuff like the denoiser... But with BiDirVM+random taking hours to converge it's not t...

Re: Metropolis SDS problem?
Tuning the start radius even smaller greatly increases the time when you start seeing VM bad side. What can be done is 20+ png renders that you can blend together in photoshop. Great, thanks for sharing your settings too! I also noticed that with smaller radii the caustics tend to appear later. But...

Re: Metropolis SDS problem?
Ah ok, that'll be it.
I was just wondering why my border rendering is darker than the full sized one and would probably figured out that it is the automatic tone mapping soon
So what kind of tone mapping does luxcoreui do internally?

Re: Metropolis SDS problem?
Do you have altered the Blender color management settings a lot? No, I didn't touch those. Currently I'm trying border (crop) resolution renders with the slower engines/samplers intending to get something like a reference image. That I'm doing from blender and will get back exploring luxcoreui late...

Re: Metropolis SDS problem?
The smaller radius did not work out, even after 20 000 passes, the non VM looks way better. You're right, that doesn't work and I think it's a bug because the light gets ever brighter the longer the rendering which shouldn't be the case. Try random sampler instead of metropolis, there the lighting ...

@B.Y.O.B.: Thanks, it works! I couldn't get luxcore.ui to work yet on my Mac, I think Dade has fixed the issue of .cfg files not getting opened but I have to wait till @robbrown makes a new release. else: # config.engine == BIDIR luxcore_engine = "BIDIRVMCPU" definitions["light.maxdep...

Re: Metropolis SDS problem?
But you seem to use a sun light source so it can be directly intersected by eye paths Thanks for that info resolving the mystery about SDS paths in BiDir! So actually in BiDir not everything is rendered bidirectionally but in case of extended light sources unidirectional (eye path) rendering happen...
