I will now on pursue a photon mapping/vertex merging solution. Photon mapping has is fair share of problems (notice the dark borders on polygon edges) but it is a least something I can work on.

No, why ? It is just a different solution only for SDs paths (like PSR was), I don't want to touch stuff that works well.
