First complete LuxCore Project and not so game changing as i thought

Post by HoppyHopp »

This is my first "real" Project with LuxCore.
I wanted to find out if it is worth to switch from Cycles to LuxCore.

Renders: about 30-45 min on single GTX 1080 and Noise-Threshold:5

My opinion:

Positive:
Halt Conditions
I really like this system. In Cycles u has always to guess rendertime, noiselvl.

Light-Cache
In simple Scences it is really good.

Tiling
It is nice to see the whole render and not tiles building up

Shaders
The Glass-Materials is awesome an so easy to set-up, the marble and cloth textures
are rlly cool.

Bidr
Renders with bidr looks so good, for me no usable in dayli work but nice to look at

Caustics
They are much better than in Cylces

Negative:

Viewport:
The viepwport performance in renderd-mode in complex scenes felt rlly slow.
Doesn't had a lot oft fun tweaking materials. And the preview mode is kinda usless.

Light-Cache
On complex-scenes it needs some time to calculate (7-10 min)
For test-renders it feels like a rlly slow workflow.

Shaders
For me it is much easier to set-up a good transclucent or subsurface shader in Cycles.
In LuxCore i had some trouble with it. I feel more free with Cycles Nodes.

Rendertime
If u compare it with normale Cycles, Luxcore was 70%-90% faster. But i use E-Cycles
an here they are even. Plus the viewport in Cycles feels much quicker.

Overall it was interesting testing a new render-engine. I was a bit hyped for LuxCore, every time
i heard from it they say: "it looks so much better than Cycles, more natural/real". For me the
differnce is not so big. LuxCore feels like it gets a bit more bounces so brighter then Cylces.
But for me its not like day an night difference. So it dont feel like it is worth it to switch
completly to LuxCore and convert hundreds of assets. But for some privat projects i will use it
and follow the evolution. :)

Nice result HoppyHopp considering it is your first real project with luxcore ;)

BTW thanks for your POV on the engine as said before it help improve spot workflow issue.

Even if light cache building time is related to CPU performance i never exceed 3mn in my production scene with I7 8700k (mostly arround 60 to 90sc).
It is not also very good to use it for test as it is more final render oriented. The scene here look simple compared to the cache building time.
Shaders
For me it is much easier to set-up a good transclucent or subsurface shader in Cycles.

maybe i can help ;) it is not the most intuitive one but it produce better result for me compared to cycles (mainly translucent shader).

Maybe because my CPU is a bit older E3-1230 v3? I dont know why it takes so long.

I used tha option but still not the same quick feeling i have in Cycles.

Do you have a comparison render and a good node set-up for leafes and candels?

here is a simple white candle. Don't even have to use SSS just glossy translucent shader. very easy to do. the principle is that your diffuse color must be dark to let pass light.

For leaves you have an example scen here :

Yes it is a pretty old one so you have to be soft with photon count ( the higher the number longer will be the cache computing time) and enable env cache mostly for final render. for your scene. Can i see your cache settings ?

Thx for the shader.

I rlly dont understand that concept. :D
Can i see your cache settings ?
I used the default Cache Settings.

Yeah, since i only render with GPU there was no need to upgrade. :D

Ok first for me the photon count here is just too much : personnally i never have to go so high in my production project.
Even 3 to 5 milion is enough for your scene.

Second your brute force radius scale is very high making you loose performance. you have a lot of diffuse surface you should be faster. I suggest you a value between 0.1 and 2 . the lower you can go with this without light leaks the faster you will render.

i don't have your clamping value here but something arround 5 is just enough.

Thank you. :)
I use Luxcore for 7 days, so there is much to learn for me.

Great renders, looks very good in the terms of composition, lighting, color mood of all assets. Dont know how the person with such a good lighting skills dont see the difference with the light behaviour in the Lux and Cycles. For me this sounds strange :( I understand that some of this issues that You wrote and our unfull-filed expectations may leads to disapoting but... anyway... dont give up :) Lux shine in your hands :D
