LuxCoreRender v2.2alpha0 released

Post by Dade »

v2.2 alpha0 released

New LuxCoreRender v2.2alpha0 release is available.

v2.2 release notes are available here: https://wiki.luxcorerender.org/LuxCoreR ... Notes_v2.2

This is the first v2.2 release and includes a couple of major new features: PhotonGI cache and Intel Open Image Denoise Library (including Blender viewport pre-view).

PhotonGI cache

Indirect and caustic cache can easily improve the rendering time of some scene of a 5-10 factor. It is really a game changing tool, especially for ArchiViz interior renderings.

Intel Open Image Denoise Library

Oidn is another new major feature capable to significantly reduce rendering times, both of pre-views and final renderings.

BlendLuxCore is available here: https://github.com/LuxCoreRender/BlendL ... v2.2alpha0

Standalone LuxCoreRender is available here: https://github.com/LuxCoreRender/LuxCor ... v2.2alpha0

VisualStudio 2017 builds

NOTE: this release for Windows is compiled with VisualStudio 2017. You may need to install the VS2017 runtime libraries: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... -downloads

How to use the new Intel denoiser:

For final renders:
Open the render properties and enable the "LuxCore Denoiser" panel. The intel denoiser (OIDN) is selected by default.

Start the render and open the tool panel (shortcut T), then select the "LuxCore" category on the left.
You can run the denoiser at any time during the rendering. To see the denoised result, switch the pass from "Combined" to "DENOISED".

For viewport renders:
The denoiser is enabled by default for viewport renders, you don't have to do anything to use it. Just let the viewport render run until it pauses and the denoiser will kick in. You can change when the viewport pauses in the render properties, "LuxCore Viewport Settings" panel. You can also disable the viewport denoising in this panel.
Note: The viewport denoiser currently does not work in the following cases:
- Transparent film enabled in camera settings
- Imagepipeline plugins that distort the image might throw off the denoiser, for example color aberration or bloom (this does not affect final renders)

How to use the new PhotonGI cache:

Open the render properties and enable the "LuxCore PhotonGI Cache" panel.
By default, only the indirect cache is enabled while the caustic cache is disabled.

Parameters
The parameters are a work in progress and not yet finished, in the future some of them will be automated or hidden.
The ones you need to change most often are the photon count (use more photons if the cache is splotchy) and the lookup radius (scale it with your scene, the default of 15 cm is suitable for a room-sized interior scene).
In scenes with hidden light sources that require many bounces you might need to increase the photon depth.

Most parameters should have tooltips with further explanations.
Note that the photon count and max. size parameters are in thousands, so if you enter "100", 100000 photons are fired/stored.
The three advanced parameters normal angle, usage threshold scale and glossiness threshold should be left at their defaults in most cases.

You can use the debug setting to view a cache directly, to make it easier to judge the cache quality.

Looks successful to me. Have you restarted Blender?

Yep, it seems it works, but reports wrong version, so I tried to upgrade once more, got that error and thought it doesn't work.

Ah, I forgot to update the version number.
I found two other issues, once they are fixed, I'll repackage v2.2alpha0.

On Linux, you have to update to v2.2alpha0 manually if you want to use the viewport denoiser, because the OIDN executable made a change in the updater necessary (the "denoise" binary needs to be executable, you can also fix this manually with "chmod +x denoise").
