Caustics by Imagemap bumps

Post by igmar75 »

Hi all,
I'm new to LuxCoreRender, and it's awesome!

I obtain really beautiful caustics by applying a texture (for example Blender Clouds) as the bump input in a face of an otherwise clear window. I would like to use a custom image map instead of the available textures as bump map. So I loaded an image with the ImageMap node, and connected it to the Bump input, but this doesn't work. Attached the blend file.

Any idea to get this work?
Thank you!

A tip, try scale your scene to a realistic size, your scene would be 100's of meters large if it were real, that's why you needed a noise size of 50 instead of 1, as well as the spot lamp you used being 1 million lumens!

Press 'CTRL-A', 'S', '0.01', 'ENTER' and then change the noise size and lumens to 100x smaller. Makes the scene a lot easier to work with in Blender as well.

As far as I can tell, both the clouds texture:

And bump image work:

The reason your not getting the same caustics is because you need more variation in the image you drew, the Blender cloud texture has much more detail.

For some more fun... turn on dispersion like below in your scene:
