Colorspace and primaries

Post by Egert_Kanep » Sat Feb 22, 2020 12:47 pm

Is luxcore using rec709 colorspace, would it be possible to add ocio support to luxcore?

The answer should be yes because it uses sRGB space that is part of 709.

It is possible but I think the raw LuxCore outputs is the input of Blender image pipeline so if you have OCIO in Blender it should be applicable to BlendLuxCore too.

When we do colorconversion after rendering we are stuck with small srgb gamut then. But would it be possible to have already aces gamut inside luxcore?

You get out what you throw in: I mean that LuxCore just transports values and uses 32bit floating point resolution for each component so it is more up to Blender/BlendLuxCore as far as I know.

You can use the filmic tonemapping from Blender as well. Color management in Blender works the same way as with Cycles.

But maybe you use LuxCore outside of Blender?

You can probably use the filmic ocio config in your compositing software.

I haven't tried it personally though.

@dade

I'd still like to bother you a bit with this colorspace thing. I'm not sure how much work this would be, but maybe at least to consider doing it at some point.

Here is an article about the aces and hkw rec2020 would be better option for rendering colorspace. I do not totally yet understad this particular topic myself, but it seems like using wider gamut is unavoidable if LuxCore would be to keep up with the standards.

Or maybe to start rendering in aces rather than even in rec2020

Better yet to have full support for ocio colormanagment.
