I'm thinking that if something like displacement is planned for 2.3 then this could be done too?
it's distributing mesh at rendertime on another mesh, using uv coordinates and tiling, takes no vram(or almost none I guess).

And if we combine this with few other requested features you could in theory take triplanar mappin+stochastic texturing+ this geopattern rendertime meshes and create ultra fast endless and lightweight grassland or something similar.. Just a wild idea for 2.3 or later...
