I assume it is not possible to split an image with 3 channels into 3 textures with 1 channel each? Or some other trickery along those lines, like putting all 3 channels behind each other into a 1 channel texture? I don't know what hardware image maps are exactly, but I guess something like that woul...

I'm guessing Cycles stores RGB (i.e. 3 channels images) as 4 channels, wasting a 33% of GPU memory. Can someone confirm this ? It shouldn't be hard to test by using a very large texture map with 3 or 4 channels and checking the amount of GPU memory used: if the amount is the same, my theory is conf...

I use 2.91 right now and didn't notice any problems. But newer versions should also work.
Custom normals are now supported for every Blender version that is 2.83 or higher, but were not in the past, which is probably what you mean with "some modifiers didn't work".

You could look at some other open source render plugins for 3ds max and see how they do that. For example the appleseed plugin (you can also ask the appleseed devs in their discord for pointers where to start looking in the code, they are very friendly).

In the underwater example scene, it's done more for completeness' sake, because it is intended as an example. In general you only have to take care of the starting points of the rays (camera, and maybe light sources if using light tracing/bidir/PhotonGI) and any point where the ray should change vol...
